Few schools, if any, offer programs in the specialized area of art therapy. In this article, we take a look at two top-rated schools that offer graduate degree programs in art therapy. The U.S. News & World Report has rated both schools highly that carry the approval by the American Art Therapy Association (AATA). Students may be able to attend evening classes and will be able to earn their art therapy degree within two years.
Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, CA
The U.S. News & World Report accorded Loyola Marymount University third position in its 2014 list of top regional universities in the West. A marital and family therapy program is available through the College of Communication and Fine Arts; the program emphasizes clinical art therapy. After they complete the two-year, full-time program, students are awarded a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Marital and Family Therapy. The university carries the approval of the American Art Therapy Association (AATA).
Seton Hill University in Greensburg, PA
The U.S. News & World Report accorded Seton Hill University 12th position in its 2014 list of best regional colleges in the North. The Princeton Review ranked Seton Hill University among the Best Northeastern Colleges on its 2010 list. One of the best three graduate programs offered at the school, Seton Hill’s art therapy program, has enjoyed recognition by the AATA since 2000. The art therapy program comprises of 60 credits, and the school holds most classes in the evening to allow working students to attend the program.
