Computer Systems Analyst Education Requirements and Job Description

Companies and organizations rely on computer systems analysts for their contribution to troubleshooting hardware and software issues. They are usually required to have completed an undergraduate degree program and can specialize in various specialty areas. In this article, we will look at what a computer systems analyst are required to do in order to follow a successful career path.

With technology evolving constantly, firms feel the need for trained personnel to maintain their computer systems in a current and efficient manner. Computer systems analysts apply critical thinking and computer science in helping firms and their computer systems to operate in a more efficient way. Computer systems analysts use their skills in designing and developing new systems that include both software and hardware in keeping with company specifications. They also get busy resolving issues within existing systems and expected to keep systems up-to-date and secure.

Education Prerequisites

Computer systems analysts can also choose any one area of concentration in the field such as software quality assurance or system architecture. They can choose to work on a particular type of computer system such as a business, accounting or engineering system. Computer systems analysts are usually expected to have completed an undergraduate degree program in an applicable field like management information systems (MIS), engineering and information or computer science. Coursework revolves around making students adept in designing and implementing computer systems. For instance, curricula in degree programs at MIT include systems analysis, management principles, cost accounting, operating systems, and computer programming.

In recent times, employers have begun to give priority to computer systems analysts who have completed a Master of Business Administration degree program in information systems (source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) (www.bls.gov)). Employees in advanced positions are usually required to hold graduate degrees; experience in the industry will improve the chances of getting employment. For instance, a job with a financial institution is more likely to go to an analyst who has a graduate degree in finance.
