Director of financial planning and analysis oversees the undertakings of subordinates and finance professionals. This individual is also responsible for providing actionable and proactive analysis and planning inputs to senior leaders. The work of this working professional also includes overseeing or monitoring monthly activities including analysis and management of operating expense, oversight, reporting of actual and accurate financial reports, forecasting results before years’ results by business unit, headcount and product.

Individuals who are qualified to take the job of director of financial planning and analysis are the ones who display impressive communication skills, ability to navigate complexities of organizations and can negotiate, influence and lead efficiently and successfully. Effective and proven leadership skills and qualities, executive presence, capacity to defend, and express concepts and ideas are necessary.

Directors usually work on forecasting and planning, financial management focusing on expense analysis and operating expense, and operational excellence wherein they identify opportunities for efficiency and excellent functions. They can efficiently utilize resources to improve productivity. Directors of financial planning and analysis also works on supervising and controlling the monthly expense and other related business methods to make sure that all expenses are properly accrued and recorded.

This position facilitates various project costs, benefit analysis and other expense-model activities like monthly and yearly forecast estimates, long-range financial planning, yearly budget process, and more. Directors also work on reviewing and managing cost allocations, driving improvements on business processes and modeling, providing financial consulting on strategic support and expense performance.

The roles played by directors are highly significant in terms of delivering sound financial planning and analysis. Other tasks of directors include the following:

•Leading the development process of the yearly budget.

•Working closely with internal owners of budget.

•Developing and distributing executive dashboards for operations and teams.

•Directing the reporting analysis and variance analysis of the budget.

•Leading reviews meetings and working for ways to develop better forecasting and reporting.

•Partnering with other financial models for investors and lenders including yearly reporting needs in cash flow reconciliations and projections.

•Overseeing years of report forecast process.

•Providing financial analysis and planning resources for essential projects if necessary.

Long years of experience in the field of financial planning and analysis are important if you want to pursue a career as a director, and these years must signify management level. It is crucial that you have completed a Bachelor’s Degree in economics, business or finance and have attained advance studies.

A qualified director must have a collaborative style and impressive track record of building and maintaining good working relationship with a different organization levels. It is an advantage that as a director, you should display impressive management skills and strong leadership to be able to develop and coach direct reports.
