Fixed Income Analyst Job Description

Job Descriptions November 27, 2013

A Fixed income analyst serves as a primary member of the team leadership and is considered a technical professional, within the organization. Fixed income analysts perform the difficult technical tasks of the organization. Moreover, the organizations will depend on the implementation experience of this person. They are responsible for self-sufficiency, providing small project responsibility for the organization.

Fixed income analysts have three primary responsibilities: determine debt security values, create advice reports, and performance monitoring. Applicants who are aspiring for the role must have a university degree in accounting, finance, or in any related filed. Employment opportunities for analysts are highly available in large banks, corporate companies, investment firms, and in any related industries.

Analyzing market activity is the primary role of fixed income analysts. They advise the organization or firm on which action to take, in order to minimize the risk of loss and produce the best yield of investment. The fixed income market trades in fixed income financial instruments or debt securities. A government bond is a perfect example of a debt security that pays out on certain dates.

The key role, for analysts, is to determine the bonds value for payouts dates, rates, purchase, and what will be the best interest of the organizations from the act. Organizations that usually trade in fixed income bonds are investment firms; however, non-financial firms do this so that they can build an income stream, which is based on investment.

Fixed income analysts also advise reports to provide background on historical performance, bond, comparable investment tool, ranking in the marketplace, and other news that can affect the bond’s performance. The reports also include recommendations.

In the reports, the analyst indicates whether the organizations should buy, hold, sell, hedge, or not to buy a certain bond. The decision of the analyst must be supported with reliable information and details including the current offer, risk assessment, and options. Other duties and responsibilities of fixed income analysts include:

•Maintaining and managing fixed income products efficiently.

•Supporting fixed income strategies by performing market and portfolio analysis.

•Monitoring fixed income performances.

•Supporting senior fixed income portfolio managers and investment strategist as needed.

•Addressing customer inquiries and problems, in order to generate business within fixed income filed, and to support the asset growth.

•Performing stress tests and simulations on existing and proposed portfolios.

•Communicating with performance analysts, broker dealers, vendors, equity managers, and research providers to perform portfolio management.

•Contributing fresh information to portfolio strategy and ongoing investment ideas discussion.

•Participating in business meetings to contribute ideas and recommendations for investment.

•Analyzing financial statements and developing investment thesis whenever needed.

Talking to people who works in the investment industry can give you the idea about the work environment in the investment firm. Typically, the pressure is intense, the working hours are long, and you will be dealing with demanding clients.
