Higher Education Articles February 28, 2013

Online high school diploma program that is accredited offer similar curriculum to a regular secondary school, which allows adult students to earn a high school diploma online. Adult students may select online general educational development prep classes, but the tests have to be taken at an approved testing center.

Discovering Accredited High School Diploma Program

Students can find the source of information on accredited high school programs that are offered online through the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), which is a non-profit organization that operates an accrediting commission for distance learning programs. The DETC website (www.detc.org) provides individuals with a list of online high school programs accredited by its commission.

Expectation for Online High School Programs

The high school diploma programs offered online generally adhere to the curriculum required by the state where they operate. To see detailed graduation and curriculum requirements for a specific program, aspiring students need to consult the education board in the program’s home state to ensure the high school has the appropriate state approvals. The education structure for a majority of programs is similar to that of a high school program offered at a traditional school. Classroom coursework includes subject areas such as foreign languages, history, social studies, science and math. Dual credit courses or advanced placement are also offered by many programs. However, a majority of online high school programs exempt some classes such as debate or speech classes and physical education classes that require the personal presence of students. While students are required in some programs to document physical education by submitting signed forms, such requirements are waived by others.

Students use email, instant messaging, voice and video conferencing, and online discussion forums to turn in assignments and communicate with instructors. Similarly, instructors use the same methods to return graded work and interact with students. Other educational services are made available to online students by a majority of programs, such as tutoring, counseling and extracurricular programs. Diplomas are mailed to students who have completed all graduation requirements.

Online High School Equivalency Diplomas

General educational development (GED) examination preparatory courses can be taken online by students, but the GED exam has to be taken in person at a testing facility. The American Council of Education (ACE) that standardizes and develops the test, advises students who are interested in taking the exam to be cautious of programs that offer to administer the examination online, since these are not accredited or approved programs.
