CPI Certification: How Crisis Prevention Training is Done

Higher Education Articles December 10, 2012

The Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) and other similar professional agencies conduct training courses in crisis prevention; such training are devised to benefit human resource personnel, healthcare professionals, educators and counselors who can learn how to deal with disruptive, violent, or emotionally distraught individuals. In this article, we will discuss how human service professionals can complete a certification program in crisis prevention and help educate their co-workers, in crisis prevention.

CPI Certification Defined

The usefulness of crisis prevention training gets underlined when individuals with behavioral and cognitive disorders demonstrate verbal combativeness or physical violence. The Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) is an international agency that helps train individuals in crisis prevention with various certification programs the trainees can complete.  The training programs are devised for use by human service providers and educators; those who seek certification can choose to specialize in workplace violence prevention, dementia care and nonviolent crisis intervention.

Training Coursework

Training in nonviolent crisis prevention as offered by CPI are devised to hone trainees’ skills in handling difficult situations by arming them with knowledge of best practices in the field. Students become adept in the identification of at-risk people and the use of verbal and non-verbal techniques in defusing belligerent or hostile attitudes. They know how to manage anxiety and fear in crisis situations and avoidance of injury when crisis situations take a physical turn. Additionally, they learn how to respond to fires, terrorist attacks and natural disasters among a variety of other situations.

There is a training module offered by CPI that teaches how to intervene in the event of a crisis in the workplace, the module goes by the name of Prepare Training. The program focuses on developing effective communication skills and addresses workplace safety. CPI offers a dementia care specialization course that can be useful to caregivers such as therapists and social workers, among others. The coursework helps students learn to identify Alzheimer’s and other stages of dementia and administer appropriate treatment in accordance with the individual abilities of their patients. Caregivers who utilize the training, learn to focus on patient care rather than on behavioral matters.

Certification Options

Completion of a seminar running over three or four days duration and passing the program assessment will help students become instructors, armed with CPI certification. Not only will the participants in these Instructor Certification Programs learn how to respond to crisis situations, but how to teach their peers. Students can utilize such trainer certification in the fields of prepare training as well as nonviolent crisis prevention. The state counseling, education and nursing boards will award continuing education credits to students who complete these training programs. Maintaining their credentials will require certified instructors to attend a renewal course once every four years. Those who seek expertise in crisis intervention for persons afflicted with violent behavioral disorders or autism can benefit from these courses.
