IV Certification Classes in Texas with School Information

Dallas Richland College offers continued education in IV training to existing pharmacy technicians. Lone Star College in The Woodlands provides associate degree programs and certificates in pharmacy technology, preparing students for IV certification from the National Pharmacy Technician Association.
Lone Star College IV Programs
This is a two-year public school with its main campus located north of Houston in the Woodlands, Texas. There are four other locations that are available to students. Those who want to undergo IV training at Lone Star can accomplish this either within the graduate degree program in nursing or as part of the curriculum relating to pharmacy technology. Students who complete an associate degree or certificate program in pharmacy technology can take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board exam that comprises of ninety questions. Certification from the PTCB is mandatory for those who want to register as pharmacy technicians with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.
Certification in Pharmacy Technology
This thirty-one hours course teaches students about the metric measurement system, dilution and concentration of IV fluids, proportioning dosages and proper intravenous flow rates. Additionally, students learn about preparing intravenous admixtures that are IV fluids combined with the right amount of drug additives. They also learn hand-washing techniques, correct equipment usage and safe and sterile handling practices.
Associate of Applied Science in Pharmacy Technology Program
This is a two-year degree course that includes the same IV admixtures and compounds classwork that forms part of the certificate program. Apart from the requirements for the certificate, degree seekers also have to complete an extra thirty-four hours of coursework in the area of concentration and take part in a practicum, in the field.
Coursework of Associate of Applied Science in Nursing
Lone Star has an integrated curriculum program as one of four tracks leading to a graduate degree in nursing via training in IV therapy. Students are taught the basics of correct IV procedures; to that end, they learn to insert, maintain and remove the IV. The course also covers correct administration of fluids and intravenous medications.

Richland College IV Programs
An IV certification course is offered at Richmond College, which is a member of the Dallas County Community College System; the School of Mathematics, Science and Health Professions administers the program at this two-year Texas institution. The course is devised to improve the skills and knowledge of pharmacy technicians who engage in the compounding of sterile products. The requirements of the Texas State Board of Pharmacy are satisfied by the program.
ACPE Approved IV Technician Certification
Pharmacy technicians use this course, which carries the approval of the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) to acquire additional skills in intravenous procedures and medications. The program has a curriculum that lasts forty hours including twenty live contact hours and twenty home assignment units. Pharmacy techs become adept at compounding and dispensing IV medications under aseptic or sterile conditions. Proper handling of sterile products and equipment including hazardous drugs and chemotherapy agents, is emphasized.
