List of Inspiring Nursing Quotes

Higher Education Articles July 22, 2013

Nursing has caused those involved in it, and those surrounded by it, to inspire others with their thoughts on it.

Here are some inspiring nursing quotes.

“The trained nurse has become one of the greatest blessings of humanity, taking a place beside the physician and the priest.” – William Osler MD

Dr. William Osler was one of the four physicians who founded John Hopkins Hospital, and has been called the “father of modern medicine”.

“Nursing as an art: and if it is to be made an art, it requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation, as any painter’s or sculptor’s work; for what is having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body, the temple of God’s spirit? It is one of the Fine Arts; I had almost said the finest of Fine Arts.” – Florence Nightengale

International Nurses Day is celebrated globally on the date of her birth.

“Nurses serve their patients in the most important capacities. We know that they serve as our first lines of communication when something goes wrong or when we are concerned about health” – Lois Capps

Lois Capps is currently serving as the U.S. Representative for California’s 23rd Congressional District.

“I am not sure exactly what heaven will be like, but I know that when we die and it comes time for God to judge us, he will not ask “How many good things have you done in your life?” Rather he will ask, “How much love did you put into what you did?” – Mother Teresa

She left home at age 18 to become a missionary, and spent the rest of her life giving care to the poor and sick.

“Panic plays no part in the training of a nurse.” – Elizabeth Kenny

Elizabeth Kenny was an Australian nurse who laid the foundation for physical therapy.

“To do what nobody else will do, a way that nobody else can do it, in spite of all we go through; that is to be a nurse.” – Rawsi Williams BSN, RN

Rawsi has over 20 years of experience in the healthcare fields and is now a public speaker.

“We often think of nursing as giving meds on time, checking an X-Ray to see if the doctor needs to be called, or taking an admission at 2:00am with a smile on our faces. Too often, we forget all the other things that make our job what it truly is; caring and having a desire to make a difference.” – Erin Pettengill

Erin found herself helping the desperate in Haiti, and rediscovering skills she nurtured over 17 years ago in nursing school.

“I have an almost disregard of precedent, and a faith in the possibility of something better. It irritates me to be told how things have always been done. I defy the tyranny of precedent. I go for anything new that might improve the past.” – Clara Barton

Clarissa Harlowe Barton established the American Red Cross after working as a nurse with soldiers during the American Civil War.

“Nurses have come a long way in a few short decades. In the past, our attention focused on physical, mental and emotional healing. No, we talk of healing your life, healing the environment and healing the planet.” – Lynn Keegan PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN

Lynn is one of the pioneers of the holistic health movement in nursing.

“When life’s problems seem overwhelming, look around and see what other people are coping with. You may consider yourself fortunate.” –Ann Landers

This quote from the legendary advice columnist is particular fitting for nursing.

“They may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel” – Maya Angelou

A poet, actress, author, playwright and activist, Maya reminds us the importance of how we make people feel.

“Caring is the essence of nursing.” – Jean Watson

Jean Watson’s theory of human caring was developed in the 1970s. Watson considers caring a science.

“Bound by paperwork, short on hands, sleep, and energy… nurses are rarely short on caring.” – Sharon Hudacek

From the author of the 2004 “A Daybook for Nurses: Making a Difference Each Day”.

“The capacity to care is the thing which gives life its deepest significance.” — Pablo Casals

This quote from a Spanish cellist applies so closely to nursing that it is included here, as part of the thirteen inspiring nursing quotes.
