List of Medical Degrees Offered at Top United States Medical Schools

Several leading medical schools in The United States provide Medical doctor (M.D.) degrees. Graduates in most of these programs are awarded either Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or Doctor of Medicine degrees. In this article, we have outlined three institutions offering medical degree programs that have been rated as the best in the country by the U.S. News & World Report. We have also mentioned some of the medical degrees conferred from these universities.

Doctor of Medicine

Any list of medical degree programs offered in the country typically includes the M.D. degree and Doctor of Medicine programs. A M.D. degree may be earned by a student who enrolled into a four-year medical school; classroom coursework typically includes physiology, pharmacology and microbiology. Supervised rotations through specialties such as obstetrics, cardiology and surgery are used to provide practical experience. After completing the medical degree program, graduates are required to participate in residencies that are either in a hospital or clinic settings; residencies can last for three to eight years then the graduates have to take the board and state licensing examinations.

Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.)

This is another program that is popular in the country. A Doctor of Osteopathic performs tasks that involve the holistic diagnosis and treatment of the human body. The specialization area focuses on the relationship between organs, muscles, bones, and nerves. About two out of three Doctor of Osteopathic are primary care physicians who focus on specialty areas of concentration including family practice, pediatrics, and internal medicine. The medical degree of a D.O is offered in a four-year osteopathic medical school. Coursework includes subject areas such as physiology, histology, and osteopathic principles and practice. While a twelve years internship is mandatory for graduates, they usually serve residencies ranging from two to six years before sitting through a board and state licensing exams.

Harvard University

Harvard University’s Medical School was founded in 1782; the Division of Medical Sciences at the university was established in 1908. The Division of Medical Sciences was meant for students who want to pursue a career in teaching or medical research. Four Ph.D. programs are offered at the division; they include neuroscience, virology, immunology, and biological and biomedical sciences. There are eleven departments in Harvard Medical School; additionally, there are forty-nine hospital-based departments; joint M.D programs in management, public health and public policy are offered through these departments.

Johns Hopkins University

The Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University was ranked higher than any other department of medicine in the country with respect to National Institutes of Health grant support. John Hopkins offers two medical house staff programs, one at Bayview Medical Center and the other at John Hopkins Hospital. Trainees involved in the fellowship training on a categorical track such as primary care are imparted training at Bayview. At Johns Hopkins University’s Department of Medicine, clerkships in medicine are offered alongside a M.D. to Ph.D. program. The Department of Medicine is made up of over twenty-five divisions such as neurology, radiology, pharmacology, pediatrics, emergency medicine and cell biology.

University of Pennsylvania

The country’s oldest medical school is the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, which was found in 1765. The University of Pennsylvania has been rated by the National Institutes of Health as the country’s second best for training grants awarded and medical school research performed. The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Hospital, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center; three affiliate hospitals where students receive hands on training and pursue internship programs. The university offers over forty clinical departments including urology, neonatology, plastic surgery, neurology, anesthesia, radiology, and dermatology.
