Higher Education Articles April 21, 2014

Performing research in campus laboratories and classroom participation are featured in the nation’s top universities that offer Biology programs. Those who graduate from a bachelor’s degree program in Biology will be qualified for jobs at medical laboratories, chemical and pharmaceutical companies, and research facilities. Graduates may also continue education by earning master’s, Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees.

Best Schools with Biology Programs

The general characteristic of the best schools with Biology programs in the United States is that their coursework combines classroom lectures with research done in state-of-the-art laboratories on their campuses. Graduates of a bachelor’s degree program in Biology can seek entry-level work with pharmaceutical and chemical companies, medical laboratories, and research facilities. Some students opt for continued education by enrolling into master’s degree, Ph.D. or MD programs.

Stanford University – Stanford, California

In 2010, the U.S. News and World Report ranked Stanford’s Biology program as the best in the United States. Those who major in Biology at Stanford can choose from three degree options. They can choose a biology program with honors and a field of study or General Biology with or without honors. Coursework in the field of study allows students to narrow their study to one area of concentration out of six possible choices, namely, neurobiology, marine biology, molecular and cellular biology, microbes and immunity, ecology and evolution, and biochemistry and biophysics. Coursework in the General Biology program comprises of classes in core science principles and biology. Before students can begin their biology courses, they are required to complete core prerequisite classes during the first year.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology – Cambridge, Massachusetts

Apart from a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Biology, the Department of Biology at MIT offers a minor in biology for students who might want to major in another discipline. As many as 14 research programs are available to students in the department — these include programs dealing with cellular biology, stem cells, cloning and cancer. Biology majors at the school are afforded two options, namely, course VII-A, which could prepare students for careers that don’t involve lab research, and course VII, which is the suitable choice for those who seek careers in research.

Many students who opt to enroll into MIT’s bachelor’s degree program in Biology opt for continued education by enrolling into a graduate program, and eventually go on to earn an MD or Ph.D. degree; others could seek entry-level careers in industrial or research institutes.
