New Jersey: A Brief Overview of Nurses and Hospitals

New Jersey had 73 hospitals in 2010. Per 1,000 people, the hospitals admitted 121 residents and had 382 emergency room visits. The state had 617 inpatient days and 1,816 outpatient visits for every 1,000 people that year. In 2011, New Jersey had 78,180 registered nurses that were employed and 5,479 nurse practitioners. In New Jersey, nurse practitioners need physician involvement when prescribing medicine, but not when they are diagnosing and treating patients. In general, a day of inpatient care in a New Jersey hospital would cost $2,179.

What is a Magnet Hospital and Why Should Nurses Care?

The Magnet Recognition Program is a way for hospitals to be recognized for their commitment to a positive working environment that encourages nurses to learn, grow and succeed, as well as a focus on patient care. This recognition was created by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. According to the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, “Magnet hospitals consistently provide the highest quality of care.”

Magnet hospitals are determined by a list of criteria called “forces of magnetism.” These characteristics include:

•Nurses that lead and take risks
•Nurses working independently
•A flat organizational style that includes everyone
•Quality of care and improving quality
•Different disciplines working together
•Management that encourages participation
