Online Degree Programs to Become a Vet Technician

Higher Education Articles October 14, 2015

If you have always dreamt of being a vet tech, and you probably don’t have the time or money to pay for full-time classes, you can now relax as it is fully possible to become a vet tech by simply subscribing for online classes. Stick with us for the next few minutes and learn all you need before you become a recognized vet technician.

Online Programs for Vet Technicians

Although the prerequisites, eligibility qualifications and the course outline may vary depending on the institution offering it, there is a lot of similarity in the areas that students learn. In addition, almost all schools’ programs run for a period of three years, although this does not apply to students who take the same programs online. The following are the main duties and work a student taking the program online has to do:

•Finish all the assignments from your personal computer, if you like, you can use the University’s computer labs to take the same course.

•Have some experience after working in a recognized veterinary clinic.

•Attend meetings held at the campus, labs or ensure that you take all examinations.

•Install some specific types of software on your computer.

•Undergo an internship program in a nearby vet clinic.

•Must have completed the necessary general education courses before joining the vet program.

Most of the universities that offer a Vet technician program at an online level also offer the same course at the main campus. In most cases, these universities combine both online and on campus type of programs for their students. For vet tech hopefuls with Degree qualifications, note that the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) prefer candidates with associate degrees in science or applied sciences.

Veterinary Technology Programs

Technology programs for the veterinary field of study are quite comprehensive and advanced, and as such, most universities only offer them at their main campuses, whether the program takes 2 or 4 years. Actually, only 8 out of the 217 accredited vet technology universities and colleges offer their programs online.

However, if you want to pursue a bachelor’s degree and still get a job as a vet tech, it is preferable if you pursue the Bachelor’s Degree in science, business, emergency care, medicine or an animal diseases related course.

What is the difference between Technicians and Technologists?

The main difference between the two types of workers lies in their research skills. The vet technicians, for instance, assist veterinarians with medical procedures while technologists often have highly training in pharmaceutical research and testing, large animal handling and must have attained a four year degree.

American Association of Veterinary Boards Certification

For one, a vet tech requires a minimum of a 2 year associate degree from an accredited university or college, though some states demand that you have some experience before you are termed eligible to be recognized by the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNA).

State Licensing and Certification for Veterinary Technician

After paying a small fee, candidates take an exam offered by the VTNE after which they may get registered immediately or do another exam if the state in which they reside in states so.

Future Job Demand for Veterinary Technician

Jobs for vet technicians and technologists are likely to increase by up to 30% for the next few years, but mainly for those candidates without Bachelor’s degrees.
