Psychometrics Graduate Degree Programs

Higher Education Articles August 13, 2013

Psychometrics is a unique field within psychology that concerns the theories behind psychology measurement. That is, the measurable abilities people display, as well as their measurable attitudes, qualities and educational levels. The science of psychometrics is what gives us the questionnaire, aptitude test, personality assessment tests, and other tools for measurement.

More about a Psychometrics Education

Once you have earned a psychometrics degree, you can find jobs as a psychometrician. The job fields open to you may include clinical psychology, as well as educational positions, or a place in human resources. Once you are enrolled in this program, you will learn quantitative, research-oriented commonalities, as well as how these apply in a variety of settings, including industry, education, health science, and so on.

Once you have graduated from an accredited school and absorb this complex information, you will be able to work in academic or industry jobs, applied sciences or in a research capacity. In addition to academia, graduating students can land jobs in program evaluation, consulting, mental health clinics, educational facilities and a wide variety of industrial companies in research venues.

When you apply for a job upon completion of a degree program in this subject, you will be expected to show significant understanding of general psychology and particularly in psychometrics, which is your specialty subject. Excellent people skills are also needed because you will be called upon by other faculty members and students to discuss matters, if you work at an educational institute or perhaps high-ranking executives, if you take a position with a firm or corporation.

Curriculum Details and Career Paths

Subjects that are routinely reviewed in most curriculums will include studies on psychometrics general theory, industrial psychology, practice of psychology testing, statistical data, research design and even regression analysis. A master’s degree is usually preferred, if you want to pursue these studies at a higher level or move up in the corporate latter. A doctorate degree is the highest achievement and will establish you as an authority in your field, with the ability to lead projects—provided you also have the experience to back up your education. You may also be expected to carry first or second class honors in studies, be proficient in English, and have excellent communication skills.

When you land a job, your role will be organizing assessment procedures, whether for an industrial or non-profit model. You will also be on the cutting edge of this technology, working with websites, artificial intelligence that interprets test results, and creating complex robust adaptive testing frameworks. Lastly, as an expert in the field, you will use your foresight and textbook knowledge to reconcile these exciting new technologies in a number of settings, including organization settings, a clinical practice, or even a school scenario.

Perhaps this is a career path that feels natural to you. You may already be fascinated with psychology and methods of testing that can help reveal the way people are to you. Instead of being content with easy personality tests, why not delve deeper? Put your interest in evaluation and assessment to good use and make a profitable career out of these skills. Start an exciting career in the real thing: psychometrics!
