Higher Education Articles September 13, 2015

This article talks about the best graduate schools offering architectural programs and information about those schools.

Overview of Schools Offering Architectural Graduate Programs

Master of Science (M.S.) in Architecture, Master of Architecture (M.Arch.), and Ph.D. in Architecture programs are available at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University of California – Berkeley. Both schools have similar program components. While Berkeley is in the western part of the country, MIT is the east. Both are highly rated; MIT enjoys a rank slightly higher than Berkeley. In this article, we take a look at some top architectural graduate schools in the United States.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge

In 2010, the U.S. News and World Report ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at number four on its list of top national universities. Both doctoral and master’s degrees in architecture are available at the school. The traditional Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) at MIT enjoys the National Architectural Accrediting Board’s accreditation. Those interested in non-professional, theoretical architectural study can aim for a Master of Science (M.S.) in Architecture Studies. The school awards doctoral degrees in building technology, design and computation, and criticism, history and theory of art and architecture.

University of California – Berkeley

In 2010, the U.S. News and World Report ranked the University of California – Berkeley (UC Berkeley) at number 21 on its list of top national colleges. Two master’s degrees in architecture, including a Master of Science (M.S.) in Architecture and a Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) are available through the university. Environmentally sound design is the focus of study at the architecture department at Berkeley, and coursework is devised to teach students digital design media with an international perspective. Students enrolled in the non-professional Master of Science (M.S.) in Architecture degree program are allowed to opt for one of the five specialization areas, including building science and sustainability, and history of architecture. A doctoral degree in architecture is also offered, often leading to careers in government, research, and academia.
