University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill
In 2013, the U.S. News and World Report ranked the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill 11th on its list of best military history graduate programs and 30th on its 2014 list of best national universities. Both an MA and a Ph.D. in Military History are available through the history department at the University. Students gain extensive resources in military history; this is partly owing to collaboration with the Duke University history department. Both UNC and Duke require enrolled students to work closely with military historians. Additionally, UNC enrollees can participate in the Triangle Institute for Security Studies. The Triangle Institute for Security Studies is a university consortium with a focus on issues of international and national security, with students and faculty from a variety of related fields.

Duke’s graduate students commonly choose military history; after they complete the competitive program, they can seek an academic career at the highest rated schools. Graduates who complete a Ph.D. in History are required to complete an oral defense portfolio and a teaching portfolio; thereby, getting better trained for teaching positions.
