Schools across the United States offer master’s degree programs in clinical psychology. Programs in the field – with a different focus at both schools – are available through two highly rated institutions. Program graduates can seek careers in numerous psychological areas or go on to earn doctoral degrees. Columbia University’s psychology students can gain access to many research labs offered by the school. Flexible scheduling is available through Pepperdine University for its clinical psychology program. In this article, we take a look at these two schools:

Teachers College at Columbia University in New York, NY

In 2013, the U.S. News and World Report ranked Columbia the 14th best on its list of the nation’s best graduate psychology programs while rating the school’s clinical psychology program the 60th best in the nation. A Master of Arts (M.A.) in Clinical Psychology is available at Teachers College and focuses on at-risk teens and children. Coursework covers various addictions, psychotherapies, and psychology in film and literature. Program graduates often aim for jobs in research, education, counseling and administration.

Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA

In 2013, the U.S. News and World Report ranked Pepperdine University – a Christian university – the 57th best on its list of the nation’s best universities. The school’s clinical psychology program was rated the 125th best in the nation. An MA in Clinical Psychology with a Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) emphasis is offered at the school, satisfying the academic requirements to obtain an MFT license in California. Students are given a choice of evening and day programs, and coursework covers human sexuality, marriage and family therapy, and the law and ethics of psychological practice. Program graduates can use the degree to seek entry-level careers in MFT practice in some states; alternatively, they may choose to pursue continuing education via a doctoral degree.
