Overview of Schools offering Master’s Degree Programs in Health Science

Schools most commonly offer graduate degrees in health science in the form of a Master of Health Science (M.H.S.); students enrolled can increase their knowledge and skills in a specific healthcare discipline. Two highly rated schools that offer MHS programs are Johns Hopkins University and Duke University. The program is offered by Johns Hopkins University through its school of public health while this program is available at Duke University through its medical school.

Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland

The U.S. News & World Report accorded Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health the top position in its 2007 list of top schools.

Eleven academic and five professional MHS degree programs are available at the Bloomberg School. The academic programs feature biochemistry and molecular biology, biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health sciences, mental health and reproductive health.

Students seeking continued education in the form of doctoral study or to pursue healthcare research would benefit from enrolling in the academic programs. Students who plan to advance their healthcare careers with continuing study would benefit from enrolling in the professional programs that cover health policy and management, environmental health sciences, behavior and society, international healthcare, and reproductive health.

Duke University in Durham, North Carolina

The U.S. News & World Report accorded the medical school at Duke University sixth position in its 2010 list of top schools. An MHS in Clinical Leadership is available at Duke’s medical school. The school developed this program to suit the needs of working healthcare professionals; enrolled students learn about responding to directions and changes in the healthcare field. Core coursework may cover healthcare strategy, healthcare finance, healthcare policy, and management. A year-long team research project must be participated in by students before they can graduate out of the program.
