Schools offering Master’s Programs in Architecture

Columbia University and Harvard University are two Ivy League institutions that are available for students seeking to earn a post-professional or professional master’s degree in architecture. Massachusetts Institute of Technology also offers architecture programs. These three schools are ranked highly by the DesignIntelligence and U.S. News & World Report.

Harvard University – Cambridge, MA

In 2012, the U.S. News & World Report ranked Harvard University first on its list of national universities. During the same year, DesignIntelligence stated that the university offers the best graduate architecture program, according to Architectural Record.

The Graduate School of Design offers the university’s M.Arch. programs; program options include a track for students seeking to earn their first professional degree apart from one for individuals that already hold an undergraduate architecture degree. The school also offers foreign exchange programs and travel fellowships, respectively, to current students and alumni that seek study abroad programs.

Columbia University – New York, NY

In 2012, the U.S. News & World Report ranked Columbia University fourth on its list of national universities. During the same year, DesignIntelligence ranked the university’s graduate architecture program third in the nation. M.Arch. programs are available through Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation for students that lack prior architecture training; those with some undergraduate experience in this area have advanced standing.

The Master of Science (M.S.) in Architecture and Urban Design and Master of Science (M.S.) in Advanced Architectural Design are among post-professional programs offered. The Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture and the Spatial Information Design Lab are also accessible to students.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) – Cambridge, MA

In 2012, the U.S. News & World Report featured MIT on its list of top 10 national universities. During the same year, DesignIntelligence ranked the university’s graduate architecture program the sixth best in the nation. It takes 2.5 to 3.5 years to complete MIT’s M.Arch. program depending on the level of undergraduate education completed by the student.

A series of design studios comprise the program, whereby drawing and visualization skills are developed by students. Coursework also includes a fabrication workshop and classes in architectural history and building technology, among other topic areas. Post-professional master’s degree programs in architectural design, architecture studies, and architecture and urbanism are also offered at MIT.
