Majors Overview May 24, 2013

In this article, students will research about associate degree programs in interior design, as well as learn about continuing education opportunities, potential career options, and program coursework to make an informed decision about their education.

Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Interior Design

While an ABS in Interior Design degree does not exist at any colleges or universities, students who are interested in studying interior design in a two-year program should consider pursuing an A.A.S. Such programs concentrate on the fundamentals of architecture, fabrics, and design, and will prepare students for work as entry-level interior designers. Associate of Applied Science programs in interior design can focus on specifics of interior design, including bath and kitchen design, while also offering studies on visual elements and creative concepts. Students usually create presentations and drawings during the program, which they will be able to include in their portfolio when seeking work. Typically, a general educational development (GED) certificate or a high school diploma is sufficient to apply to these degree programs.

Interior design program courses may focus on drafting, sketching, and graphic design, among other forms of visual presentation. Licensure, Certification and Continuing Education Information

Individuals seeking occupation as freelance designers, want advancement in their careers, or become consultants will benefit by completing a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design program. Additionally, an individual can showcase his or her expertise in the field through voluntary professional certification. Many levels of certification in the bath and kitchen design are offered by the National Kitchen and Bath Association. Interior designers who seek licensure are required in most states to pass the National Council for Interior Design Qualification examination. Candidates usually need to meet experience and education requirements mandated by the state to qualify for the licensing examination.
