Degree Overview: Associate of Arts (A.A.) Degree in Interior Design

An associate’s degree program may benefit those interested in an interior design career. The Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree programs in Interior Design may not be available. Alternatively, Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree programs in Interior Design offer related studies and are easier to find.

A.A. Programs in Interior Design

It typically takes students two years to complete an associate degree program in Interior Design; admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma. Coursework involves the examination of technical theories, tools and visual design concepts employed in interior designing. The focus of programs is on training students to seek entry-level careers and to provide quality design services. Once they complete the program, students can expect to be adept at presenting construction documents, creating interiors, applying design principles, practicing project management and furnishing interiors.

Coursework

Coursework covers the development of interior design techniques and skills. Students hone their interior designing skills through a combination of design projects, classroom lectures, and practical learning opportunities. Coursework may cover topic areas such as:

•Computer-aided drafting
•Textiles
•Building construction techniques
•Design planning
•Green designing
•Design materials
•Lighting

Career Choices

Students enrolled in Interior Design associate programs are prepared to seek entry-level careers as interior designers, or to perform other interior design related work such as bath and kitchen design. Individuals enrolled in an associate degree usually get trained to assume the roles of interior design assistants; (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)). Typically, to become an interior designer, they would need advanced training. Those who graduate from an associate degree program may choose from career positions such as those of:

•Stylists
•Product designers
•Decorators
•Buyers

Continuing Education Choices

Holding a bachelor’s degree and completing a formal apprenticeship program would suffice to become an interior designer. Some programs may permit the transfer of credits earned towards admission to a bachelor’s degree program (BLS). Interior designers are required to obtain licensure in some states. Passage of the National Council for Interior Design Qualification licensing test would help these professionals to obtain licensure, to be eligible to take the test; applicants would need to have six years of combined education and experience.
