Degree Overview: Associate of Arts (A.A.) Degree Programs Involving CPR Training

Majors Overview March 6, 2014

Private and public agencies, such as the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association, provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training. It is possible to get CPR training while earning a college degree.

A.A. Programs in Exercise Science

Students enrolled in an associate’s degree program in exercise science are introduced to the study of movement through exercise, the human body, and overall fitness. Coursework in an exercise science associate’s degree program typically focuses on the role of exercise in overall wellness, in addition to strength training, human development and nutrition.

The program can act as a first step to pursuing continued education in a health-related area, such as athletic training or physical therapy, or help seek entry-level careers as a life coach, personal trainer, fitness instructor or coach. CPR training may also be included in similar associate’s degree programs in sports management or health and fitness.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require applicants to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma. Incoming students may also be required to complete a medical terminology course and a healthcare introductory.

Coursework

Enrolled students in the program can expect to become adept at testing for fitness, devising effective fitness programs and conducting health screenings. General education courses are also included, such as social science and math, in addition to an internship. Coursework may include major topic areas such as:

•Exercise science principles
•Physiology and anatomy
•Health and wellness promotion
•Fitness assessment
•Nutrition for sport and wellness

Career Choices

Students enrolled in the associate’s degree program in exercise science are trained to seek entry-level careers or continued education in a health-related field. They can choose from job titles such as:

•Recreation assistant
•Coach
•Personal trainer
•Fitness instructor
•Activity director

Certification and Continuing Education Choices

Several associate’s degree programs in exercise science or related areas are devised to facilitate continued education in the form of a bachelor’s program in a health-related area. Those interested in continued education in fitness instruction or personal training can enroll into certification programs offered through various schools including the American College of Sports Medicine.
