Degree Overview: Associate of Arts (A.A.) Degree in Security Management

Those interested in private security and public safety may want to earn an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree in security management. Postsecondary education is usually required for gaming surveillance officers. Students will be trained to make difficult decisions and evaluate dangerous situations. Graduates will use their knowledge of security and business to create safe working environments.

A.A. Programs in Security Management

Students enrolled in an Associate degree program in security management are trained in the protection of facilities and individuals, the leadership of teams of security personnel and the assessment of potential security threats. Licensing for security professionals – especially, armed security, investigators and detectives – is mandatory in many states. Passage of written exams and submission to criminal background checks are requirements for licensing. Candidates may have to take special classes and pass weapons safety examinations before they are awarded licenses or certificates to facilitate the use of weaponry.

Security professionals can seek voluntary certification that would enable them to showcase their skills and knowledge in the field to potential job givers. ASIS International offers the Certified Protection Professional credential for access by these professionals.
