Associate of Science (A.S.) in Network Engineering Technology Degree Program

In certain cases, Associate in Specialized Business programs in business studies offer coursework in networking, but an A.S. degree program is likely to offer more in-depth study in network engineering technology or computer network engineering. Admission criteria typically require applicants to hold a general educational development (GED) certificate or a high school diploma. Depending on the schools, some will offer applicants track options in specialized areas, including UNIX networks and Microsoft networks. Associate degree programs concentrate on computer support and network installation. Typically, students will learn about network support, network administration, microprocessors, and operating systems. They will also learn about network design and how to maintain, install, and configure these systems for various businesses. Students who have successfully completed the associate degree program will be prepared for industrial certification examination.

Program Coursework

Typically, associate degree program consist of sixty to one hundred credit hours and designed to be completed within two years, if students are enrolled full-time. Training will be given in programming languages. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in an internship within their chosen track. Program course topics may include the following:

Career Options

Associate degree program graduates will be able to find entry-level positions within various industries, including government agencies, business management organizations, financial firms, schools, and telecommunications companies. Job duties might include monitoring, troubleshooting, configuring, installing, and analyzing wide area network (WAN) and local area network (LAN) systems. Depending on the graduates, some will work as network consultants and others will become self-employed. Graduates may obtain the following job titles:

•Computer support specialist
•Computer repair and assembly technician
•Computer technical writer
•Network technician

Associate degree program graduates might want to expand their skills and knowledge by enrolling in an undergraduate or graduate degree programs in subjects such as computer network technology or network engineering. Depending on the master degree programs, some will be available online. Individuals who are interested in teaching or researching at the college level should consider pursuing a doctoral degree program. Graduate certificates may also be earned and can provide training in advanced networking techniques and skills.
