Students can become adept at identifying and preventing privacy invasion, hacking and data theft. Two-year associate degree programs are offered at some schools in the network security field, and students are awarded similar degree titles; these include an Associate of Applied Science in Computer Networking & Information Systems Security or Associate of Applied Science in Information Network Security.

Apart from core coursework, the program curriculum typically requires students to develop analytical and problem-solving skills needed to become successful in this career field. Students will learn how to maintain and monitor the computer network system daily operations. Admission criteria typically require applicants to hold a general educational development (GED) certificate or a high school diploma.
