The electronic engineering technology career field may be appealing to those who enjoy electronics. Students may even find entry-level jobs or pass onto a greater level of education after obtaining an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree in electronic engineering technology.

A.A. Programs in Electronic Engineering Technology

Students enrolled in an associate degree program in electronic engineering technology are prepared for careers wherein they may engage in troubleshooting related to robotics technology, electrical automation and equipment systems failure. Electronic engineering technicians are also often involved in testing new electrical systems, creating circuits and maintaining existing equipment.

Schools offer this 2-year associate degree program in a variety of formats, such as Associate in Applied Science or Associate of Science. Admission criteria typically require applicants to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma.

Coursework

Program coursework blends classroom lectures and courses and hands-on instruction imparted through laboratories. In lab studies, students are taught about industry-grade software, control systems, circuit programming and simulation. Cooperative work experiences are also used to teach students. Coursework typically includes subject areas such as:

•Computer-aided drawing
•Power and motors
•Digital systems
•Electronic communications
•Technical mathematics

Career Choices

Electronic engineering technicians may seek occupations in a variety of environments, such as engineering, manufacturing, research and maintenance by employing their skills in repairing, testing and evaluating a wide range of electronic equipment. They can choose from career choices such as:

•Electronic engineering technician
•Electro-mechanical engineering technicians
•Electrical engineering technician
•Electronics installer and repairer

Continuing Education Choices

Those who successfully complete an associate degree program may choose to enter the workforce immediately in engineering technician positions in their specialty areas or may transfer credits to 4-year bachelor’s degree programs aiming to become electrical engineers. Schools also offer bachelor’s degree programs in electronic engineering technology. Technicians who gain work experience and certifications can aspire to leadership positions.

Certificate programs in various specialties and levels are offered by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technology (NICET). Additional to work experience, the passage of written examinations is essential to obtaining the certifications.
