Majors Overview December 4, 2013

Students can be trained on various mechanical and interdependent electronic components of watercraft. Those who graduate with this degree have the opportunity to be hired in boatyards and marinas, providing repair services and maintenance for many kinds of boats.

A.A. Programs in Marine Technology

Students enrolled in Associate’s Degree Programs, in Marine Technology, are provided with the practical knowledge and skills necessary in servicing commercial and recreational watercraft. Students can expect to become adept at maintaining, troubleshooting and overhauling diesel and gas engines, in addition to both outboard and inboard motors. Students are also taught about the fuel, electrical, ignition and charging systems related to the function of watercraft. Admission criteria typically require applicants to hold either a GED certificate or high school diploma.

Coursework in some marine technology programs could also include classes in marine science. Students interested in scuba diving, marine biology, and oceanography would find such programs useful.

Coursework

Coursework is devised to cover the technical skills necessary in the installation and service of mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems of marine devices. Students can supplement these technical skills by completing classes in marina safety, boatyard management, oceanography, cartography, and operations, in addition to classes in more general topics such as science, math and composition. Coursework may include topic areas such as:

•Transportation technology
•Marine surveying
•Fiberglass repair
•Marine service operations
•Diesel engine service
•Ignition systems
•Marine electronics
•Inboard motor service
•Outboard motor overhaul

Career Choices

Graduates can seek entry-level work aboard ships or in boatyards and marinas performing work that requires them to maintain and service electrical and mechanical systems. Some graduates may seek work involving the construction of new commercial and recreational seafaring vessels. They may choose from various career titles such as:

•Marine electronics installer
•Outboard technician
•Marine engine repair technician
•Engine room mechanic

Continuing Education Choices

Students enrolled in some associate’s degree programs are given the option of continued education by transfer of credits earned into a bachelor’s degree program in a related area, such as automotive technology or business management. Alternatively, associate degree graduates could also pursue bachelor’s degree programs in marine transportation or marine engineering technology.
