Degree Overview: Associate of Science (A.S.) in Computer Network Engineering

Majors Overview January 22, 2014

Students will be prepared for several computer-related fields after taking an Associate of Science (A.S.) degree program in network engineering. This program may also offer certification training, as well. The role of network architects or network engineers is to perform several technological functions, as well as provide help for hardware and software problems.

A.S. Programs in Computer Network Engineering

Students enrolled in an associate degree program are imparted the hardware and software knowledge they need in order to design computer networks. They can also expect to become adept at maintaining computer network infrastructures, identifying security threats, setting up local area networks, providing technical support and solving computer engineering problems. The broad education and hands-on training courses are devised to train students to thrive in the dynamic computer-related technology field. Admission criteria typically require applicants to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma.

Coursework

Coursework covers computer systems, networking and information technology. Coursework is augmented by opportunities given to students to complete externships. Apart from courses in operating systems and programming, students have to work through curriculum that includes topic areas such as:

•Website development
•CISCO systems
•Telecommunications
•Network security fundamentals
•Network administration
•Network support
•Network communications

Career Choices

Associate degree holders can seek entry-level careers within financial firms, government organizations, telecommunications companies, and computers systems and design firms. A job growth rate faster-than-average at 30% has been projected for database, systems and computer network administrators during the period from 2008 to 2018 (source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)). Graduates can choose from various career titles in the field including:

•LAN/WAN specialist
•Intranet/Internet administrator
•Network engineer
•Network specialist
•Network designer

Continuing Education Choices

Recruiters of network engineers prefer candidates who hold a bachelor’s degree in a computer-related field (BLS). Apart from associate degree programs, preparatory training is also offered at some schools for certification exams related to Cisco, Microsoft and A+ credentialing. Product vendors, training institutions and computer associations also offer network certifications.
