Degree Overview: Associate of Science (A.S.) Degree in Internet Technologies

Majors Overview January 21, 2014

Those interested in work that involves learning more about the internet and computers may find a career in Internet technologies to be a perfect fit. Students will be provided with the skills and knowledge to maintain and build websites when they take a program for an Associate of Science (A.S.) degree in internet technologies.

A.S. Programs in Internet Technologies Degree

Students enrolled in AS programs in Internet technologies are taught the modes of utilizing the Internet in a personal or business environment. It typically takes two years to complete an Associate’s degree program that is offered by technical schools, community colleges and other related institutions.

Participants can also expect to become adept in information technology and sharing and storing information over the Internet and through networks. Admission criteria typically require applicants to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma.

Coursework

Technology-based courses are augmented in the coursework by marketing and management courses devised to train students in every aspect of electronic marketing. Additionally, Interpersonal, communications and critical thinking skills are developed by students enrolled in the program. Some schools offer courses in a distance education format. Coursework in an AS degree program typically focuses on subject areas such as:

•Project management
•Information technology security
•UNIX programming
•Personal computer hardware
•Web-enabled databases

Career Choices

A job growth rate of 17% has been projected for computer support specialists, during the period from 2008 to 2018 (source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). The optimistic projection is based on the assumption that the Internet will continue to play an integral role in the world. Program graduates may seek entry-level careers in many positions including:

•Telecommunications specialist
•Computer support specialist
•Webmaster

Continuing Education Choices

Internet technology associate’s degree holders can with experience and professional certification seek entry-level jobs as computer systems and network administrators; those without certification and experience would have to start off as computer support specialists, and either earn promotions or improve their career prospects through continued education by earning bachelor’s or master’s degrees in and Internet- and computer-related fields.

For example, recruiters for database administrator and network architect positions typically prefer candidates who hold bachelor or master degrees. Certifications are offered through many schools, in addition to software and computer vendors and certifying organizations.
