Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) Programs

Students enrolled in Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) programs complete coursework that covers various aspects of the discipline, including design and architectural drafting. It usually takes five years to complete a professional Bachelor of Architecture degree program.

Theoretical instruction includes presentations and lectures on architecture theory and history, while practical education covers participation in projects on design and drafting. There is also an emphasis on the reasoning and problem-solving skills necessary for the designing of efficient and environmentally friendly structures.

Education Requirements

Creative aptitude is expected to be demonstrated by incoming students to the B.Arch. program in their high school coursework; consequently, these individuals would benefit from completing art and design classes. Students also need strong skills in composition, mathematics, and critical thinking. Students enrolled in some programs are not allowed to take architecture courses until after completion of substantial general education coursework.

Coursework

Coursework within B.Arch. programs covers the practical and aesthetic aspects of building design, and students learn about the software used by architectural drafters. Core coursework may include topic areas such as:

•History of architecture
•Construction materials
•Architectural design theory
•Architectural computer-aided drafting (CAD)
•Environmentally conscious design

Job and Wage Outlook

A job growth rate of 17% has been predicted for architects over the 2012 – 2022 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In 2012, these professionals brought home an average annual wage of $73,090 (BLS).

Continuing Education and Licensure Options

Licensure requirements for designers vary by state. Students can gain licensure via graduation from a program that carries the National Architecture Accrediting Board’s (NAAB) recognition. Completion of many years of supervised work experience and passage of a written exam are also required in most states before they allow architects to design buildings independently. Completion of periodic continuing education is required to keep licensure valid.
