Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Degree Programs in Applied Ministry Studies

Students enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program in ministry will develop a strong grasp of the Bible, in addition to receiving education about common ways of sharing religious teachings with other individuals and about religious figures.

Students learn how to communicate the message of the Bible to people of various backgrounds and ages. Some programs may offer instruction about missionary work and techniques, where students may learn how to share biblical teachings with groups of individuals in diverse, non-church environments. Numerous religious colleges may offer programs aimed at different religious backgrounds.

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to bachelor’s programs in this field to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma.

Coursework

Coursework of a ministry program usually focus on the development of teaching skills and providing a comprehensive grasp of the Bible. In addition to general education courses that are common to liberal arts programs, core coursework may include topic areas such as:

•Pastoral leadership
•Staff and volunteer supervision
•Church business management
•Biblical history
•Practical ministry
•Biblical interpretation
•Baptism

Career Choices

Those who complete a ministry bachelor’s degree program can seek entry-level jobs in various leadership positions. Students who have earned this degree are not usually trained to become the head pastor of a church; however, those that graduate from the program may pursue positions such as:

•Children’s church leader
•Missionary
•Youth pastor

Job and Wage Outlook

An at-par-with-average job growth rate of 8% has been predicted for professionals in this field over the 2012 – 2022 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In May 2012, directors of religious activities and education, including youth pastors and children’s ministers, brought home an average annual wage of $37,280.

Continuing Education Information

Those who complete a bachelor’s program may opt for continuing education by completing training at a seminary or by pursuing a graduate ministry program. They may select study areas such as theology, missionary leadership, divinity, or ministry, among others. Completion of a graduate program could help students hone advanced leadership skills while refining their knowledge of biblical studies.
