Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Degree Programs in International Studies

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree program in International Studies learn about analyzing the religious, social, political, and economic systems in countries worldwide. Students may determine which region they wish to study, along with the language spoken in that region. The analytical skills necessary for understanding the functioning of regions and countries in relation to the rest of the world, as well as one another, are developed by the students. Many schools offer opportunities to study abroad; the measure provides firsthand knowledge to the students about their chosen area.

Education Requirements

Critical thinking skills are emphasized by the coursework; accordingly, students are advised to complete advanced high school courses in subject areas such as literature, economics and history. The speaking and writing skills they need can be developed by incoming students via courses in speech, journalism and creative writing.

Coursework

Coursework includes various subject areas that deal with the ways of functioning of different societies. Relatively narrow subject areas such as economics or comparative religion are the focus of some programs; however, most programs provide an understanding. Core coursework may include topic areas such as:

•Cultural anthropology
•International religious studies
•International relations
•International political science

Wage Outlook

In order to be able to teach in public schools, these professionals must obtain licensure by completing a teacher education program. In 2012, high school teachers brought home an average annual wage of $55,050 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Continuing Education Choices

Those who complete the bachelor’s degree program in international studies may opt for continued education by enrolling in graduate level programs that would give students who are focusing on broad fields several far-reaching career options.
