Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) Degree Programs in Healthcare Administration

Students enrolled in BBA in Healthcare Administration programs are taught business skills and principles applied to the management of healthcare systems. Coursework commonly covers topics in health services marketing, ethical issues, personnel management, and public health policy. Some form of practical training is participated in by students, via internships, field experiences or projects.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma. Some schools require the completion of necessary business coursework before allowing them to begin core coursework in the healthcare administration major.

Coursework

Coursework is devised to impart a strong grasp of the healthcare system, including the modes of delivery of services and the assessment of their quality. Current and common issues in healthcare are studied by students in order to develop their critical thinking skills.

The program may also introduce research methodologies, thereby encouraging evaluation by students of trends and the development of new ideas aimed at meeting specific health needs. Core coursework may include topic areas such as:

•Healthcare financing
•Healthcare law
•Gerontology
•Business economics
•Business marketing
•Healthcare management
•Human resources

Career Choices

Employers of healthcare administrators prefer candidates who hold at least a master’s degree, though bachelor’s degree holders may be considered for hire by some small healthcare facilities (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Bachelor’s degree holders may also fill positions at the departmental level. They can choose from such popular career options as:

•Medical records manager
•Health information manager
•Assistant administrator

Job and Wage Outlook

Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, job growth rates of 23% have been predicted for medical and health services managers (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In 2012, these professionals brought home an average annual wage of $88,580 (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Graduates from the bachelor’s degree program can seek continued education by obtaining a master’s degree in the field, thereby qualifying them for advanced positions or work in larger healthcare facilities. They can pursue a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a healthcare management option, or Master of Health Administration (MHA).

Licensure is compulsory in every state for healthcare administrators employed in assisted-living centers and nursing homes. In order to become eligible for licensure, interested individuals would need a passing examination score, in addition to a bachelor’s degree and completion of a training program approved by the state. Licensure can be kept valid through continued education.

Health information managers can volunteer for certification offered via the American Health Information Management Association. A passing exam score and an approved bachelor’s degree would suffice to help applicants obtain the Registered Health Information Administrator credential.
