Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) Degree Programs in Multimedia Design

While schools offer several Multimedia Design Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) programs, they also offer B.F.A. programs in Graphic Design or Art wherein concentrations are available in multimedia design-related areas. Students enrolled in these degree programs learn about modes of communicating messages visually by combining numerous forms of media, including artwork, sound, and words. They receive classroom and practical instruction about ways of using design technology, including tools such as digital recording equipment, cameras, and software programs, among others.

Graduates also gain the skills to present multimedia design concepts to investors and employers. Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma; however, there are usually additional requirements in the majority of B.F.A. programs. For instance, portfolios with examples of completed projects are required to be submitted for review by applicants to some programs.

Coursework

Coursework often covers fundamental topic areas in every type of media, such as Internet design, sound, film, printing, drawing, and painting. In the majority of programs, internships and elective coursework are devised to enable enrolled students to develop advanced skills in one or more media forms, including game design or Web design. Core coursework may include topic areas such as:

•Web design
•Illustration
•Motion graphics
•Print productions
•3-D modeling
•Digital animation
•Design concepts
•Typography
•Interactive design
•2-D digital imaging

Career Choices

Armed with B.F.A. degrees in multimedia design, graduates can seek entry-level careers in fields such as animation, graphic design, marketing, print media, and film and television. They may choose from potential job titles such as the following:

•Media director
•Website designer
•Animator
•Desktop publisher
•Multimedia artist

Job and Wage Outlook

Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, slower-than-average job growth rate of 6% have been predicted for multimedia artists and animators (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In May 2012, these artists and animators brought an average annual wage of $61,370. In 2012, a decline of 5% in job growth is expected to be suffered by desktop publishers; job growth rate of 20% have been predicted for web developers. In May 2012, publishers and web developers banked $37,040 and $62,500 respectively, on average.

Continuing Education Choices

Participation in continuing education over the whole duration of their careers is likely to be necessary for multimedia professionals that specialize in technology-based media; this is because of the introduction of new design software programs and other updated design technologies.

Domestic and international-level changes in multimedia trends make it mandatory for workers to stay abreast; to achieve this, they must read trade magazines, participate in design classes, and attend industry conventions. Completion of a graduate program, such as a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in Emergent Media, may be another option for those who wish to pursue continuing education to boost their career prospects.
