Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Athletic Coaching Education (ACE)
Schools offering a physical education program usually list athletic coaching education programs as an optional minor or major. Coursework in coaching bachelor’s degree programs is usually devised to teach injury prevention, teaching techniques, sport nutrition, the science involved in physical training, exercise physiology, and sport techniques. College-level, high school, or recreational athletic environments often offer internship opportunities.
Education Requirements
Admission criteria within bachelor’s degree programs in coaching may sometimes require documentation of high school credits in algebra, college preparatory mathematics, social studies, biology, and English. Some programs also require incoming students to hold automated external defibrillator (AED) and current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification before they are allowed to begin core coursework.
Coursework
Completion of coursework within a bachelor’s degree program with a major in coaching involves about 130 hours of coursework in a broad range of subject areas, such as physical education, athletic training, and sports management. Classroom instruction may commonly include topic areas such as:

•Organization, evaluation, and administration of athletic programs
•Physical conditioning activities
•Injury prevention and safety
•Teaching and communication techniques
Job and Wage Outlook
In May 2012, coaches brought home an average annual wage of $28,360 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Wages may vary by location, certification level, and education. In some instances, coaches receive an annual pay packet, while, in others, they are paid on an hourly basis.
Continuing Education Choices
Those that successfully complete a coaching bachelor’s degree program can seek continuing education by enrolling in master’s degree programs in subject areas such as sport or exercise psychology and physical education teaching.
Additionally, they can continue education that is offered by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, among other organizations; these programs are comprised of consultation services, workshops, and conferences targeted at university or college coaching educators and K–12 educators.
