Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Programming Technology

Students enrolled in programming technology degree programs become adept at using Web interfaces aimed at modifying and extracting data. The basics of analyzing current systems, developing databases, and designing software are taught to students aimed at keeping them abreast of advances in the field. Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma.

Schools may offer the degree programs under different titles, but the coursework of various degree programs is similar. A few schools may offer programming concentration options through programs in computer information systems or computer science.

Concentration options may not be offered via programs in computer science technology or information technology; however, the programs may have general coursework. Those that graduate from these programs can expect to develop the skills and knowledge needed in the efficient management of software development projects.

Coursework

Management and technology administration is often integrated with hands-on coursework in programming technology programs. Students are able to write, maintain, and troubleshoot programming codes. Students enrolled in a programming technology degree program are likely to complete coursework that will teach them about the latest trends in programs and technology and may include the following:

•Web programming and design
•Computer operating systems
•Computer servicing
•Data structures
•Server administration
•Web design
•Management planning principles
•System analysis and design
•Database administration
•Structured query language

Career Choices

Project management and basic problem-solving skills are taught to students, aimed at making them adept at adapting and applying these skill sets to the dynamic information technology field. Graduates from a bachelor’s degree in programming can pursue different career paths, including:

•Programmer
•Web developer
•Computer systems analyst
•Software engineer

Job and Wage Outlook

A faster-than-average growth rate of 22% has been predicted for both web developers and computer systems analysts (categorized alongside information security analysts and network architects) over the 2010 – 2020 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). During the same period, a 12% job growth rate has been predicted for computer programmers, while a much-faster-than-average growth rate of 30% is expected to be enjoyed by software developers.

In May 2012, computer systems analysts took home an average annual wage of $79,680, while computer programmers earned $74,280; web developers banked $62,500; software developers of applications made $93,350; and systems software developers
Certification and Continuing Education Options grossed $104,480 (BLS).

Graduates of the bachelor’s degree program who want to stay abreast of advancements in the fields of programming technology and information technology may seek advanced certifications. Coursework in many programming technology degree programs is devised to help graduates gain professional certification, including HTML, C, C++, and Java.

Those that seek continuing education may enroll in a master’s degree program in the field of information technology offered by numerous accredited institutions, although few offer a master’s degree with a particular concentration in programming technology.
