Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Sound Arts or Audio Production
Students enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs in sound arts or audio production are taught about the recording techniques used in the production of professional music. Through the creation of audio projects, students can develop the skills needed in recording, mixing, and producing of sound for audio post-production houses, studio environments, and live events.
Students are taught about the operation of audio production equipment, such as computers, microphones, and soundboards, among others. They may also gain knowledge about industry-standard audio software programs, such as Avid Pro Tools and Apple Logic.
These programs include extensive hands-on training devised to train students for numerous potential careers in audio management and production. Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma before they can gain admittance to a four-year degree program. Students would also benefit from having an ear for music, although schools don’t formally require it for admission.

In 2012, sound engineering technicians banked an average annual wage of $41,200 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). A job growth of 9% has been predicted for these technicians over the 2012 – 2022 decade. The slow growth is attributed to the consolidation of several radio and television stations. Additionally, current technological improvements have made technicians’ work more productive, thereby reducing the necessity of new technicians.

Graduates of the bachelor’s degree program may seek continuing education by earning a master’s degree in audio production-related fields, wherein they can gain knowledge about advanced recording techniques, high-level technical skills, and theoretical knowledge.
