Degree Overview: Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B.S.B.A.) Degree Concentrating on Legal Studies

Majors Overview March 6, 2015

Students learn the effects of business-related legal issues in Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B.S.B.A.) degree programs with a concentration in legal studies. B.S.B.A. degree programs in Legal Studies may be pre-law degrees, but graduates may seek other careers as well.

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B.S.B.A.) Degree Program Concentrating on Legal Studies

Earning a B.S.B.A. in Legal Studies involves completion of coursework that is devised to impart a comprehensive business education to students and training aimed at developing their critical-thinking and communication skills.
Coursework may commonly include general business classes, including microeconomics and finance. Students use the opportunity presented through electives and major studies to examine a variety of legal aspects in business.

They analyze data and become familiar with the law, even as they learn ways of applying their legal knowledge in real-world settings. Students typically take four years to complete the program.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma. However, some specific pre-business and math courses may be recommended by some schools before they allow incoming students to enroll.

Coursework

Coursework includes introductory courses aimed at helping the student develop a strong basis in business fundamentals and writing. Electives and concentration courses are devised to teach subjects such as corporate crime and business law. Core coursework may also include:

•Cyber law
•Legal writing and research
•Environmental law
•Hospitality law
•Business ethics
•Real estate law

Career Choices

Those who complete the program can opt for continuing education aimed at a career as an attorney. They can also choose from other career options, including supportive specialist, business manager, and financial expert. A law-trained business person may seek job titles such as:

•Real estate professional
•Legal assistant
•Banker
•Estate planner
•Marketing manager

Continuing Education Choices

Those who graduate from a B.S.B.A. in Legal Studies program can choose to continue their education by earning a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree, whereby they can complete specialized courses in numerous areas, including management, legal studies, and finance.

Students enrolled in some programs are allowed to customize the program in accordance with their career goals or needs. The Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree may be pursued by aspiring lawyers after they complete the B.S.B.A. program.

Job and Wage Outlook

A job growth rate of 17% has been predicted for legal assistants and paralegals over the 2012 – 2022 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). During the same decade, personal financial advisors are expected to see a much faster-than-average growth rate of 27%. In 2012, personal financial advisors brought home an average annual wage of $67,520, while legal assistants and paralegals earned $46,990 (BLS).
