Degree Overview: Bachelor’s Degree Programs in Kinesiology

Majors Overview March 16, 2015

Get information about bachelor’s degree programs in kinesiology and their education requirements, coursework, career choices, job and wage outlook, and continuing education choices.

Bachelor’s Degree Programs in Kinesiology

Some students enrolled in a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) program in Kinesiology may treat it as a terminal degree, while others may perceive it as a point from which they may embark on a career in a related allied health field.

Kinesiology majors examine the science behind physiology. Students take many laboratory classes to receive instruction on conditioning and general strength training strategies. There is also a more specific focus on the development of fine and gross motor skills. Schools often offer specializations in athletic training, exercise science, and physical education. Students may also gain a good grasp of general business practices.

Education Requirements

Some prerequisite courses, such as chemistry, physics, and introduction to kinesiology may have to be taken by prospective students to some colleges before they are admitted to the kinesiology bachelor’s degree program. Passage of these exams with a C or better is expected of incoming students, in addition to submission of a minimum GPA.

Coursework

Coursework within the bachelor’s degree program includes participation in hands-on experiences through internships and practicums. Participation in faculty-led research initiatives may also be enabled, while core coursework may include:

•Biomechanical principles and the human body
•Individualized fitness assessments
•Pharmacology
•Foundations in nutrition
•Sports and exercise psychology

Career Choices

Those who complete a kinesiology bachelor’s degree program may seek entry-level careers in schools, sports medicine practices, or fitness clubs. They may choose from popular job options such as:

•Physical education teacher
•Community recreation coordinator
•Athletic club instructor
•Private fitness trainer
•Exercise physiologist

Job and Wage Outlook

Fitness trainers are expected to see an above-average job growth rate of 13% over the 2012 – 2022 decade. Over the same period, high school physical education teachers are projected to witness low growths of 6% (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

The optimistic prediction for fitness trainers is credited to an expected increase in interest in fitness among individuals and businesses alike. In May 2012, fitness trainers brought in an average annual wage of $31,720, while high school physical education teachers banked $55,050 on average during that year (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Those who complete the kinesiology bachelor’s degree program may opt for continuing education by earning a Master of Science (M.S.) in Kinesiology or a degree in physical or occupational therapy. Additional education would enhance students career prospects by helping them showcase their skills to potential employers.
