Degree Overview: Bachelor’s Degree Programs in Sports Management

Majors Overview March 20, 2015

Get information about bachelor’s degree programs in sports management and their education requirements, coursework, career choices, job and wage outlook, and continuing education choices.

Bachelor’s Degree Programs in Sports Management

Schools commonly offer a sports management degree program as a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Sports Management. Many of these programs avail sports management concentrations to students.

Classes in exercise science are combined with courses in sports teams and athletic activities management. Sports management degree programs also include general business concepts.

There are a sufficient number of business courses within the coursework of a non-business degree program in the sports management major to merit earning a minor. Sports industry concentrations, including golfing management, for instance, can vary by school. Also, schools may offer sports management sub-specialties in journalism, marketing, or public relations.

Education Requirements

Incoming students are required to take foundational courses to some programs in sports management. Additionally, schools may require applicants to take classes in calculus and composition. Candidates may also need to have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.

Coursework

Coursework over the duration of a sports management bachelor’s degree program covers general classes in accounting, economics, finance, and personnel management. Core courses may include topic areas such as:

•Marketing techniques in sports management
•Fundraising strategies for athletic events
•Sports psychology
•Sports laws
•Athletic facilities management
•Managing risk in sports environments

Career Choices

Those who complete a four-year sports management degree program may seek occupations with schools, athletic teams, professional sports organizations, and health clubs. They may opt for popular job titles such as:

•Sports agent
•Sports shop owner
•Sports camp director
•School athletic director
•Athletic event planner

Job and Wage Outlook

In May 2012, agents for athletes brought home an average annual wage of $96,120. In 2012 Illinois, Tennessee, Florida, New York, and California were among the states that had the highest employment of sports agents.

Continuing Education Choices

Those who complete a bachelor’s degree program in sports management may pursue continuing education by earning a graduate-level degree, such as a Master of Science (M.S.) in Sports Management. A more general Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree program is another choice available to these students.
