Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) Programs in Business Information Systems

The Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree with a business information systems concentration is devised to train individuals who want to pursue a career that combines business with information technology.

Schools offer these programs in on-campus and online formats for part-time and full-time students. Students pursuing an accelerated program would need only a year to complete the program. Part-time students could take up to five or six years to complete the requirements of the degree. Technical courses are blended with business and management training classes in creating an executive-ready entrepreneur and businessperson.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a bachelor’s degree; the baccalaureate award need not be a business degree in order to satisfy the requirements of many schools. In accordance with the level of their business knowledge, students may have to complete pre-M.B.A. business classes, after which they may continue on with the core and elective coursework.

Coursework

Core courses mark the start of M.B.A. programs before students can go on to specialized classes. The core program includes some of the information systems classes; however, specialized classes comprise the advanced coursework. Some schools recommend or require business internships, wherein hands-on experience can be gained by students. Core coursework may include topic areas such as the following areas of study:

•Programming ethics
•Information systems ethics and management
•Information systems and database studies
•Business law and ethics
•Technology innovations
•Finance and managerial accounting
•Overcoming financial problems
•Corporate financial management

Job and Wage Outlook

Armed with a business information systems degree, students can pursue a wide array of occupations. Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, a job growth rate of 15% has been predicted for computer and information systems management positions (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Over the same decade, computer programmers are expected to see 8% growth (BLS). In May 2012, computer and information systems managers brought in an average annual wage of $120,950, while computer programmers banked $74,280 on average per annum during the same period (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

While employers do not insist on completion of continuing education courses, doctoral programs in business administration with concentrations in information systems are offered at many schools. The focus of these programs is usually on solution seeking projects that have been presented to the institution.
