Majors Overview July 12, 2015

This article talks about Master of Management (M.M.) degree programs in IT Project Management and their education requirements, coursework, career choices, job and wage outlook, and continuing education choices.

Master of Management (M.M.) Programs in IT Project Management

Students enrolled in a Master of Science (M.S.) in IT Project Management program learn to deliver results by combining team-leading strategies with their grasp of technical concepts. They learn ways of overseeing the outlining and implementation of a variety of projects in technology-based work settings while they strive to deliver results within set budgets and time-frames. Coursework is devised to build on prior (early professional or undergraduate level) IT experience while preparing students to seek leadership positions.

Coursework covers leadership and general management courses that highlight the means to analyze productivity and project structure, in addition to the motivational methods used to manage individuals to ensure effective collaboration aimed at achieving a common goal. The overall goal of the program is to develop successful project managers capable of competing in the workforce. The program achieves this through the completion of projects and research.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold an undergraduate technology degree, although individuals with several years of significant IT work experience find exemption from this condition at some schools. A statement of purpose, letters of recommendation and GRE scores must also be submitted by prospective students.

Coursework

Coursework includes the conduct of research into management methods, in addition to collaboration with peers in managing simulated or actual projects aimed at preparing students for their career path. Core coursework may cover topic areas such as:

•Organizational behavior
•Statistical methods
•Project management
•Risk assessment
•System implementation

Career Choices

Program graduates can pursue various IT positions in merchandising, manufacturing, government, banking, and telecommunications. They may choose from possible job positions such as:

•Business development specialist
•IT Analyst
•Quality Manager

Job and Wage Outlook

In March 2014, IT project analysts brought in an average annual wage ranging between $44,117 and $89,483. During the same period, IT quality assurance managers earned average annual wages in the range of $66,270 – $121,838, while most business specialists banked between $33,958 and $77,506 per annum.

Continuing Education Choices

Program graduates seeking to continue their education may want to look into a doctorate management degree program specializing in IT expertise with an emphasis on project management techniques. These programs aim at furthering professional excellence, as well as relevant research to the field.
