Master of Science (M.S.) Programs in Conference and Events Management

Few schools, if any, offer conference and event management master’s degree programs; however, many schools offer similar programs, such as the Master of Science (M.S.) in Tourism and Hospitality Management. Coursework in the master’s program includes areas such as law, hospitality, feasibility studies, and financial management. Students keen on careers in conference and event management can pursue courses in event marketing or other relevant topics. An internship is in many programs, and the option to complete a capstone project in the industry, or a thesis is afforded to students.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a bachelor’s degree and submit transcripts thereof. Students usually take two to four years to complete this degree plan before participating in an internship.

Coursework

The primary focus of a master’s degree program in hospitality and tourism management is on event and conference planning and management. Students will gain both a practical and theoretical grasp of festivals, special events, conferences, expositions, meetings, and celebrations. Core coursework may cover subject areas such as:

•Enterprise technologies
•Case studies
•Organizational behavior
•Hospitality industry law
•Hospitality marketing strategy
•Restaurant development
•Feasibility studies
•Tourism
•Financial management

Career Choices

After they complete a Master of Science (M.S.) in Tourism and Hospitality Management, students may seek leadership positions at airlines, hotels, sports organizations, event management companies, and theme-attractions. Others may wish to pursue careers in public service administrations in international tourism.

Job and Wage Outlook

Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, a much-faster-than-average job growth of 33% has been predicted for meeting, convention and event planners (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). The growth comes from an enhanced need for meetings by a company’s entire staff at one location, driven in turn by the increasingly globalized nature of organizations. In 2012, these professionals brought in an average annual wage of $45,810.
