Information on Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Degree Program in Healthcare Education

Majors Overview August 9, 2015

This article talks about Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) degree programs in Healthcare Education and their education requirements, coursework, career choices, job and wage outlook, and continuing education choices.

Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) Programs in Healthcare Education

Registered nurses (RNs) who wish to learn how to provide assistance to nursing students could benefit from enrolling into MSN in Healthcare Education programs. These programs will also help them gain expertise in the creation and evaluation of curricula, as well as the use of theories and concepts of nursing to further nursing education.

Evening classes are offered at some schools while online programs are available at others. Practicum requirements can typically find completion by online students at healthcare facilities in the proximity of their homes. There is an emphasis on research and students are usually required to complete a thesis. Students take 2-3 years to complete most programs.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a current registered nurse (RN) license, as well as a 4-year bachelor’s degree. Passage of the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) examination is a requirement for international students. A statement of purpose is often required to be submitted by applicants.

Coursework

A supervised specialty or teaching practicum and completion of a thesis typically augment the coursework. Students typically have to complete 36-42 credit hours and flexible class schedules are offered, thereby allowing students to attend classes in the evenings. Core coursework may cover topic areas such as:

•Roles in health care organizations
•Information systems
•Health science statistics
•Data analysis
•Nursing research
•Advanced practice nursing
•Health care financing
•Psycho-educational intervention
•Curriculum development

Career Choices

Program graduates may seek careers in staff development, practical nursing, and teaching in degree programs. Nurse educators mainly find employment in the primary industries of healthcare and social assistance (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). These professionals may choose from possible job positions such as:

•Hospital staff educator
•Home health agency educator
•Staff development coordinator
•In-service educator
•Public health educator

Job and Wage Outlook

Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, a job growth of 19% has been predicted for registered nurses, including advanced practice nurses (BLS). During the same period, health educators are expected to see a 21% job growth. In 2012, nurse practitioners brought in an average annual wage of $96,460. Health educators and nursing instructors and teachers earned respective average annual wages of $48,790 and $64,850 (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Graduates of an MSN program may choose to further their education by enrolling in a doctoral degree program that prepares them for research, teaching and administrative positions. A variety of certificate programs are available in areas of specialty, including public health preparedness, health communication, gerontology, vaccine science and health policy.
