Information on Master of Science (MS) Degree Program in Information Systems Engineering

Majors Overview September 8, 2015

This article talks about Master of Science (M.S.) degree programs in Information Systems Engineering and their educational requirements, coursework, career choices, job and wage outlook, and continuing education choices.

Master of Science (M.S.) Programs in Information Systems Engineering

Students seeking a strong grasp of computer hardware, systems analysis, and systems design could benefit from enrolling into a master’s degree program in information systems engineering. Schools may offer concentrations in digital health, digital government, entrepreneurship, and information security. Over the whole duration of the program, students are often taught about managing systems, supporting current technology, completing the integration and administrative assignments, and managing future systems. Students are usually required to complete a thesis or other type of capstone project.

Educational Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a baccalaureate degree. They may also have to submit an essay outlining career and educational goals. A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score is a requirement for students from other countries where English is not the native language.

Coursework

Coursework covers the investigation of enterprise architectures and integration, system design and analysis, business strategies and leadership principles. The development and presentation of a thesis or development of a senior project are also expectations for students. Core coursework may cover topic areas such as:

•Robotics
•Networks and computer communications
•Software systems design
•Distributed computing theory
•User-centered design
•Strategic information systems
•Research methodology
•Secure computer systems
•Data structures and algorithms

Career Choices

Program graduates may seek jobs in many fields, including manufacturing, banking, government and education. They may choose from possible job options such as:

•Network service engineer
•Database Analyst
•Systems Manager
•Network systems administrator
•Server Administrator

Job and Wage Outlook

Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, managers of computers and information systems are expected to see a 15% job growth (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Over the same period, network and computer systems administrators, and database administrators are expected to witness respective job growth rates of 12% and 15%.

In May 2012, computer and information system managers brought in average annual wages of $120,950. During that period, network and computer systems administrators and database administrators earned respective median wages of $72,560 and $77,080 (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Program graduates seeking advanced skills may pursue a doctoral degree that could lead to a career in research or academia. They can gain training in specialized areas through completion of certificate programs. The International Council on Systems Engineering offers the Associate Systems Engineering Professional (ASEP) and Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) exams that graduates may prepare for by entering into a systems engineering certificate program.
