Majors Overview October 6, 2015

This article talks about master’s degree programs in crime scene investigation and their education requirements, coursework, career choices, job and wage outlook, and certification choices.

Master’s Programs in Crime Scene Investigation

A master’s degree in forensics is available to students who seek training in graduate-level crime scene investigation. The emphasis of these programs is in chemistry, biology, chemistry, research science, and anatomy. Apart from core criminal justice topics, the curriculum covers the application of the principles of forensics to the evidence found at a crime scene. The curriculum also covers the use of learned skills in providing assistance to law enforcement in solving cases. Hands-on training is also received by students, through an internship in corrections, law enforcement, or the court system.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a bachelor’s degree in a forensic or natural science field. Often, schools require applicants to have completed particular undergraduate science classes, such as organic chemistry or forensic anthropology. Applicants are expected to have high Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores and grade point averages. Submission to a background check and a Hepatitis B vaccination are other requirements.

Coursework

Program coursework combines both practical and theoretical aspects of forensic research and analysis. Core coursework may cover topic areas such as:

•Tire/Footwear Analysis
•Vehicle Impact Reconstruction
•Drug Analysis
•Fingerprint Analysis
•Photography and Documentation
•Bloodstain Pattern Analysis
•Explosion and Fire Debris
•Trace Evidence

Career Choices

Program graduates can seek careers as forensic science technicians.

Job and Wage Outlook

Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, a slower-than-average job growth rate of six percent has been predicted for forensic science technicians. In May 2012, these workers brought in an average annual wage of $52,840.

Certification Choices

The American Board of Criminalities (ABC) offers professional certifications that program graduates can avail by passing a certification exam. Additional certification as a Certified Crime Scene Investigator is offered by the International Association of Identification after these professionals have gained a year of work experience.
