Information on Master’s Degree Programs in Elementary Mathematics Education

Majors Overview August 12, 2015

This article talks about master’s degree programs in elementary mathematics education and their education requirements, coursework, and job and wage outlook.

Master’s Programs in Elementary Mathematics Education

A master’s degree in mathematics education is perfect for elementary mathematics teachers who seek further education in the field. Master’s programs in this field are particularly beneficial to currently licensed teachers who seek career advancement, and students who wish to gain initial teaching certification.

A Master of Science (M.S.) or Master of Arts (M.A.) in Mathematics Education is available at many schools. Some schools offer a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in Mathematics, but the various programs have similar coursework. The focus of the curriculum is on pedagogical strategies, curriculum design, and teaching methods. In addition to a student-teaching practicum, a thesis or capstone project may have to be completed by program graduates.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria in some programs require students to hold K-6 mathematics teaching licensure and bachelor’s degrees in education. Varying by program, applicants may also have to have teaching experience. Students with bachelor’s degrees in mathematics or a related field seeking state teaching licensure may find other programs preferable.

Coursework

The focus of programs is on mathematics principles, such as equations and inequalities, pairs and graphing, order of operations, integers, decimals, percentages, and fractions. The program also includes the curriculum of children in kindergarten through sixth grade. Program coursework usually incorporates a thesis, capstone project, or comprehensive exam; initial certification is available through completion of a student teaching component. Core coursework may cover topic areas such as:

•Geometry
•Logic
•Statistics
•Research in education
•Mathematics classroom assessment
•Linear algebra
•Discrete Mathematics

Job and Wage Outlook

Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, a job growth rate of twelve percent has been predicted for elementary school teachers (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In May 2012, these teachers brought in an average annual wage of $53,090.
