Professionals already in the field or those without any experience looking to develop an understanding of theological foundations, the Bibles, and Christian ethics should look into master’s degree programs in worship studies. Students with an interest in a career in ministry, such as leading worship in church settings or participating in music ministry, will get the preparation necessary through this degree.

Information on Master’s Degree Programs in Worship Studies

Master’s degree programs in worship studies are available at many schools. These educational institutions often enjoy affiliation with a particular denomination. While most schools offer conventional on-campus programs, some offer online programs to facilitate access to lectures and class materials whenever students want, within a specific time-frame.

In some programs, students are allowed to select an area of specialization such as worship music or leadership. Every program is devised to impart foundational knowledge of the Bible’s teachings on worship, the history and purpose of worship, problems in worship, and the types of worship. A research paper or final project must be completed by students.

Courses chosen by students must reflect their career objectives goals such as church planting, applied music, and the role of a worship leader. The flexible nature of many of these programs allow students to select their electives such as Christian leadership or music technology.

Master’s Programs in Worship Studies

Schools offer master’s degrees in worship studies as Master of Worship Studies (M.W.S.) and Master of Arts (M.A.). These programs teach students about applying their knowledge of theology, scripture, and cultural analysis in ministering to congregations. Knowledge of worship principles, foundations, and traditions may also be in the program. To complete capstone experiences, students may have to engage in research within a ministry setting. A program may take about 2.5 years to complete.

Education Prerequisites

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a bachelor’s degree in youth ministry, worship, music, or a related field. Additionally, prerequisite coursework, such as theology, Bible studies, or other religion courses, might have to be completed.

Coursework

To augment core studies involving theology, the Bible, and Christian rituals, courses within a specific track, such as worship leading or preaching, may be chosen by students. They may choose from elective coursework such as Christian leadership or music technology. Core coursework may cover topic areas such as:
