Majors Overview July 19, 2015

Those with a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree have an increase in salary potential and more career options as education professionals. School districts usually pay according to education and experience. Master’s degree programs result in a greater earning potential and larger starting salary for teachers. Teachers can also look for new careers in education with a M.Ed. degree.

Master of Education (M.Ed.) Programs in School Counseling

School counselors in most states are required to hold a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree in School Counseling; all state credentialing prerequisites are met by approved M.Ed. in School Counseling programs. Typical coursework may cover ethical and legal issues, counseling theories, behavior management, cross-cultural counseling, statistical inference, and career development.

Job Responsibilities

School counselors work to help students in high, middle and elementary schools and at each level emphasize different things. However, these professionals attempt to get rid of barriers to a student’s academic and social success. In order to achieve this, they use various methods, including group and individual counseling, facilitation of programs about drug and alcohol issues and identification and intervention for students that have serious family problems. Counselors assist high school-level students in deciding and preparing for their future.

Wage outlook

In May 2012, elementary and secondary school counselors brought in an average annual wage of $62,970, while junior college counselors earned $56,730 per annum, on average (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Master of Education (M.Ed.) Programs in Learning Technologies

This M.Ed. degree program can prove beneficial not only to college and K-12 teachers, but also to graduates in helping them train for careers as new media specialists and corporate trainers. Graduate students enrolled in many programs are allowed to choose an area of focus compatible with their career goals. K-12 technology integration can be the concentration area of individuals who want to enhance the use of technology in their school districts or schools. A focus on multimedia design and development can benefit those who have a greater interest in the creation of materials for training and education. Core coursework may cover instructional systems, curriculum and instruction, and research.

Job Responsibilities

Instructional technologist is a nomenclature used to describe a class of instructional coordinators involved in evaluating and improving technology integration in schools. They conduct training seminars on how state standards for technology use in their lessons can be better met by teachers. Instructional technologists may also develop curricula, with content varying with student levels, conduct research, and design Web-based learning tools.

Wage outlook

In May 2012, instructional coordinators brought in an average annual wage of $60,050; instructional technologists did not have a specific salary breakdown (BLS).

Master of Education (M.Ed.) Programs in Educational Administration

A M.Ed. in Educational Administration can prove beneficial to experienced teachers seeking leadership positions in their schools; the degree is a form of licensure for administrator positions. Program graduates can seek careers such as assistant principal or curriculum coordinator, apart from leadership positions in educational organizations beyond the school. Advanced skills in teaching strategies, curriculum design, school law, school finance, and management strategies are available through graduate programs.

Job Responsibilities

Establishing performance goals and school policies, in addition to managing staff and administering school funding fall under the responsibilities of educational administrators. In a K-12 environment, assistant principals and school principals coordinate with teachers in ensuring that the school is meeting its objectives in the classroom. In a multifaceted role, principals also meet with community agency representatives, parents and students. These professionals may increasingly engage in fund-raising and public relations efforts aimed at drawing support from community businesses. Development of school-to-work transition partnership programs may also be helped by principals, apart from other programs aimed at serving students’ various needs.

Wage outlook

In May 2012, elementary and secondary principals brought in an average annual wage of $87,760. There are different average wage levels for educational administrators in elementary and secondary schools located in different geographic locations.
