LPN Programs in New York City with Course Descriptions
Majors Overview February 7, 2013There are several schools around and in New York City, which offer licensed practical nursing (LPN) programs. Two of the largest schools, Bronx Community College and LaGuardia Community College, both offer students certificate programs.
Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) Program at CUNY LaGuardia Community College
Both nursing and practical nursing programs are offered by the Health Sciences Department of the City University of New York (CUNY) LaGuardia Community College. Additionally, the department offers veterinary technology, mortuary science, radiologic technology, dietetic technician, mental health and physical therapy assistant programs.
Practical Nursing Certificate
LPN programs offered at CUNY LaGuardia Community College prepare graduates to start working as practical nurses in healthcare facilities that offer chronic and acute care services. Once they complete the program, graduates will be ready to pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). This practical nursing certificate program that involves forty-eight credits has two phases: pre-clinical and clinical. Coursework includes subject areas such as mental health nursing, maternal child health nursing, pediatric nursing, medical surgical nursing, fundamental nursing concepts, medical dosage mathematics, psychology, human biology, nutrition and pharmacology, covering topics such as documenting client outcomes, mental health disorders, implementing care plans and diagnosis recognition. Coursework is delivered as a combination of classroom lectures and hands-on training in local healthcare facilities and campus lab settings. Students can also enjoy field experiences in settings such as hospitals, nursing homes and health facilities.

Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) Program at CUNY Bronx Community College
A practical nursing certificate is offered through the Department of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences at CUNY Bronx Community College; a registered nurse associate degree program is also offered through the department.
Licensed Practical Nursing Certificate
Students can earn fifty-six credits by completing the LPN certificate program at CUNY Bronx Community College that takes place mostly in the evenings and on weekends. Pre-clinical coursework requirements include interpersonal communication, psychology, physiology and anatomy, and composition and rhetoric. Coursework relating to the clinical-phase LPN program’s nursing courses includes mental health concepts, medical surgical nursing, infection control, psychiatric nursing, pediatric nursing, maternal child nursing and anatomy and physiology. A series of nursing skills courses are also required to be completed by students; these cover communication for healthcare professionals, pharmacology computation, diagnostic testing procedures, medical terminology and medication administration. Completion of the program will make graduates eligible to take the New York State NCLEX-PN.
