Physical sciences involve analytical skills as well as problem-solving. UMD students studying in this field will have to learn how to evaluate scientific claims and how this information will tie in with industrial technology, medicine, environmental hazards, as well as various legal requirements. This project gives students the chance to research independent studies, leading to a higher bachelor’s degree. Students are required to maintain at least a 3.2 GPA or higher. In addition to the GPA average, students must complete a study course in physical science as well as an independent research assignment and an oral examination in the form of a thesis.
Student groups include NOBCChE, which is the student chapter of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers. Undergraduates and graduates can join the group. Other organizations of interest include the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Latinos and Native Americans in Science and the Chemistry and Biochemistry Graduate Student Organization.
